My Proudest Images: Chuck Inglefield

After years of making pictures, I find that I am fortunate if I create one or two images per year that fulfill my expectations of what I hoped the image could be when I released the shutter. This is that collection.

This image was made upon my first visit to St. Peter's Basilica in June of 1993. It was pure luck that I arrived at the right time of day to have this beautiful light pouring through the windows. I had a Canon EOS630 with me at the time and I was shooting slide film that I rolled myself. I took just over 800 images that summer and this one remains the most memorable. Although at the time I didn't realize it, this was the beginning of my love for natural light photography.

I lived in Gdansk Poland for three months in the summer of 1994. I had the ambition of creating a company there. It was to be a chain of laundrymats. At the time, the country only had one laundrymat, and it was in Warsaw. Anyway, that summer I spent my weekends riding a bike around the surrounding towns taking photos. I happened upon this building/courtyard scene and saw a nice geometric design for a black and white image. Just as I was finishing up a couple of shots, this boy wandered around the corner and saw me. I caught his fleeting, playful gesture just before he left the shadow into the full sunlight.

I've titled this image "Remembering" It's an image who's final result wasn't entirely planned. I had seen this old broken recliner while driving home a couple days before. I took my dog out for a walk with me as I planned to visit the scene with my camera to make an image of it. When I got there, Abby decided she needed to inspect the chair for herself. I immediately realized the impact this would have on the scene and got off just one shot with her like this before she had moved on and no longer had an interest in the chair.

This image is important to me for the reason that it sparked my interest in the storytelling power of a photograph. From this image came the idea for a full project (which is still ongoing) which I have called Urban Melancholy.

This is probably my favorite image. It was created with the intent of telling a story. But the story's beginning and ending are left open to interpretation. As soon as I shot the image, I knew I had succeeded with fulfilling my vision for the story. It is another image that is included in my ongoing photo project, "Urban Melancholy".

In the summer of 2005, I found myself in Florence, Italy for a friend's wedding. On my last day there, I decided to go for a stroll before going out for one last dinner. I found my way toward the Arno river, standing on a bridge looking toward the Ponte Vecchio. People were bustling about as the sun began to set. I decided I wanted an image of a cyclist panned against the beautiful background of the river and disant bridge. Upon getting home, I found a much more interesting image within that collection of cyclist shots. For me, this one told a simpler, more thoughtful story and separated itself from the typical travel image.

Ah Venice...the land of so many photo opportunities. I've been to Venice a few times now and find when I get home that the photos I have created often miss the intimacy that you feel when in this wonderful city. When I am strolling thru the maze that is Venice, I always have my camera on and ready, and in this case, I was glad I did. I had just a moment to see and compose this scene before both the woman and then the cat were gone. It is these intimate moments that make me love to visit this city. Just this once, I was lucky enough to capture one.

In the spirit of Gary Winnogrand, a favorite photographery of mine, I always have my camera on, and the functions preset so that I am able to grab an image on the go if it arises. Such was the case here. In 2006, I found myself in Florence, Italy for the second year in a row. This time, I was taking my Mom on her first trip to Europe. As we were walking back to our hotel from visiting a local market one morning, I looked across the street and couldn't believe the symetry of the scene before me. I dodged between two parked cars and fired off two shots before these women were past. Europe's beautiful backdrops always make me pause. Here the wall, simple as it is, provides just enough of an interesting backdrop to give this image some story.

This image is kind of special for me. I hadn't taken my camera out of the bag for a long time, with the exception of shooting some photos for friends. I was starting to think I wasn't any good at photography anymore and that my creativity had stagnated. So on this day, I decided I would take the camera out with me as I walked the dogs. I came across a scene which I felt had some potential for a good image. I worked the scene from outside in and came away with this shot. It was an immediate reward, and confirmation for me that I still was seeing creatively.
